The pre-amp of the DBX 286S features a whopping 60dB of gain. More than enough to signal many a microphone with even the most subtle sources. Of course, the input also features a 48v Phantom switch to power condenser microphones.Compressor
The compressor makes sure that hard peaks in your recordings are a little less intense and the soft parts a little louder. This gives drums, for example, a thick and full sound and, in the case of podcasts, ensures that speakers can always be heard clearly and do not go much too loud when there is, for example, a burst of laughter. A de-esser is a little harder to understand. Actually, what a de-esser does is reduce irritating high frequencies such as the pronunciation of an S or F. When we talk we use a lot of air when pronouncing the S and F. This air flow is recorded harder than the other sounds and thus stands out in the mix. A de-esser pushes this frequency down with compression only when it is too loud. So you can quite surgically remove these irritating sounds without adjusting the whole sound.
EnhancerCompression
is a very useful tool, but can sometimes make a sound sound sound a bit flat and lifeless if you use too much of it. It is for this reason that the next process is an enhancer. ander/gate determines when a signal may or may not go to the output and how much of it may be taken away. This is especially useful with drums and percussion because it allows you to set a percussion instrument, such as a kick or snare, to be heard only when it is actually being played.
