It hit the road with synth pioneers like Joe Zawinul of Weather Report, who toured with two copies connected by a custom interface designed by his keyboard engineer. From Edgar Winter to Stevie Wonder (who had his 2600's control panel written in Braille), the 2600 was everywhere. The device even played a starring role on the silver screen - it was used by sound designer Ben Burtt to create the voice of R2-D2 in the original Star Wars trilogy and also to generate sound effects for Raiders of the Lost Ark. The ARP 2600 is more than a synthesizer, it's a complete sound design studio. Sure, it's fortified with an arsenal of oscillators and envelopes, a filter and an amplifier - the building blocks of classic analog synthesis. But the ARP 2600 goes far beyond the basics with a built-in spring reverb tank and even stereo monitor speakers. The 2600 offers much of the functionality of a vintage modular synth system, including ring modulation, delay and voltage processors, an envelope follower, audio preamp, a clock-switching switch, noise source, a sample & hold module, signal converters, an aux mixer and even parallel wired/multi jacks. The best of both worlds
Nearly every slider and switch on the ARP 2600's front panel is hardwired to a dedicated control source. With hardwired paths, you have instant control over everything the 2600 has to offer, allowing you to play the instrument as is, without patching. If you're in the mood to roll up your sleeves, throw some patches and throw yourself into sound design, you can interrupt the internal connection in true modular fashion by connecting a patch cable to one of the hardwired controls. As a programming aid, the 2600's famously detailed panel graphics clearly show the signal routings available and provide insight into the instrument's architecture. It is this marriage of sophistication and ease of use that sets the 2600 apart from other vintage analog synthesizers. Improved 3620 keyboard
The 3620 keyboard that comes with your 2600 is true to the original design, but includes a number of significant improvements. With 49 full-size keys, channel aftertouch and portamento, the 3620 is also duophone, meaning you can play two keys at once, with options for single or multiple triggering. During a performance, you can use a footswitch to fix the interval between any two notes, without having to use the oscillators again. You can add vibrato via a special circuit controlled by aftertouch, or by the built-in LFO (Low Frequency Oscillator) with a choice of three waveforms. A modern, flexible arpeggiator has been added that lets you manually sequence and play your own patterns. Carried over from the original are the Pitch Bend knob and 2-octave Up/Down Transpose switch. A secure 8-pin DIN cable now connects the keyboard to the head unit.
