The FS-5U is a rugged footswitch that allows you to engage, for example, a guitar effect (or series of effects) by holding down the pedal. When you release the pedal, the effects are turned off again. This also makes the FS-5U suitable as a sustain pedal. Thanks to its polarity switch, which reverses the on/off status of the pedal, it goes together with almost any product that has a footswitch input.
See also the Boss FS-5L (latched) foot pedal, for an on/off switch that doesn't need to remain depressed. Multiple FS-5U/L's can be attached to each other via the knife-and-slot connections on the side.
