All flags are out! We got it. Fi-na-lly. As everything with the iconic band Tool everything takes a long time; the songs, the stretch between the release of one record and the other, and so did the release of this Justin Chancellor signature pedal by Dunlop. But no problem because, as always, we'll just wait patiently. With Tool, it's always worth the wait.

Perhaps we should mention that our chief of guitars here at Klundert (and also writer of this text) IS A HUGE TOOL FAN. One of those who knows every beat of drummer and virtuoso Danny Carey, who knows exactly what year guitarist Adam Jones' Les Paul is from and who has analyzed every word of singer Maynard James Keenan's cryptic lyrics. And just like that, the real Tool fans also knows that the band would be nowhere without bassist Justin Chancellor and so, as far as we are concerned, he should get (even) more credit than he possibly already gets. Yes, because of his skills on the bass guitar, but because of his unprecedented creative approach to sound just as much. The man is nothing short of brilliant.

Those haunting wah sounds on "The Patient," the all-consuming fuzz on "H" or "Jambi" or the articulate filters on "The Grudge"...where you think you're listening to guitar, it's often Justin Chancellor on bass. To create those sounds he uses an array of effects and this pedal summarizes some of his signature sounds; wah wah, filter and fuzz.

Ride the spiral to the end, it may just go where no one's been.
For the Tool connoisseur all of the sounds are very recognizable, but because of the design and possibilities of the pedal, it definitely invites you to get creative, having much more to offer than just the Tool sound. On top of that, it can also be used very well for guitar.
The wah and adjustment possibilities of the filters perhaps make it so genre-transcending; the pedal can be used as a conventional wah wah with the rocker pedal which is based on the Dunlop 95Q wah with classic red Fasel inductor. So the pedal works with a leaf spring and switch-less. For the classic wah you can set the volume and Q, however, you can select two types of wah filters with the footswitch at the very top. With that, you toggle between Wah and UK Filter. UK filter is an envelope-type filter that is very vocal and is mostly addressed by Justin himself as a fixed filter (and thus less as a classic wah wah). However, this setting can also be applied in a very funky way and with all the possibilities added together, this may be the filter / wah effect the bassist has been waiting for.

About that fuzz. Sweet lord...what a beast. Thick, hi gain, definition, respect for the low end...Really awesome. The controls (fuzz / gain, tone and volume) are very sensitive and effective allowing you to set the fuzz within a wide range of mild overdrive, to super high gain and from aggressive to woolly. You can use it on its own by tapping the switch on the side or in combination with the wah pedal by turning on the footswitch (the fuzz, tone and vol. controls will light up red). When you turn on the wah pedal, you then also turn on the fuzz with it.

The Justin Chancellor pedal is nice and big with a footprint of 25x14 cm, heavy and solid. Included is a footswitch topper to make the footswitches more accessible. The pedal runs on a regular 9vDC power supply (not included) or on a battery.
