Hagstrom Fantomen, White Gloss

Fantomen (Swedish for "The Phantom") is a collaboration between Hagstrom's design team and Swedish band Ghost, bringing Hagstrom's legendary playability and technical excellence to a new, edgier realm. They started with an elegant asymmetrical solid-mahogany body with a flamed maple top, to which they attached a mahogany neck using their classic pin-and-tenon neck joint system. Of course, being a Hagstrom, the Fantomen utilizes the H-Expander® truss rod and Resinator® fingerboard for the ultimate in playing surface stability and optimal tonal enhancement. Together, these components provide an incredibly stable, resonant and responsive sonic foundation.

With a relatively thin 3.5 cm body, the Fantomen is beautifully balanced and surprisingly light. A 648-inch scale provides a slightly sharper attack and more sustain than classic guitars with a 24.75-inch scale. A neck design that provides full, unrestricted access to all 22 frets meets the needs of even the most virtuosic player.

The goal was to equip the Fantomen with electronics that would allow for a diverse palette of sounds, ranging from classic, vintage colors to screaming metallic brilliance. Hagstrom worked with Swedish pickup guru Johan Lundgren, designer of pickups used by artists such as Martin Hagström (no relation to Meshuggah!). Lundgren recommended two different humbucker designs: No. 2 in the neck position and No. 5 in the bridge position. The result covers a huge expressive range; from soft, warm tones to the kind of attack and intense dynamic output that meets the demands of even the most extreme styles of music. Each pickup can be split to single-coil mode through push/pull switches in the tone control for even more sonic flexibility. This guitar speaks to many different voices.
