Neumann TLM 103

The Neumann TLM 103 is a studio large diaphragm microphone. The TLM103 is a fantastic studio microphone that delivers the true Neumann sound with the capsule of the U87.

A great recording with minimal self-noise!

The Neumann TLM 103 large-diaphragm cardioid condenser microphone features a capsule from the U 87 and a transformerless circuit - not to mention the classic Neumann sound! The TLM 103 is a great microphone for any professional or project studio, and thanks to its minimal self-noise, it is used for classic high dynamic range recording, sampling (especially for very low amplitude sources) and Foley work. This microphone is also robust enough for the live stage, as Jack White has used the TLM 103 to mic amplifiers in live situations.

Cardioid pattern to reduce runout

The cardioid TLM 103 uses a proven transformerless circuit used in high-end Neumann microphones to achieve the otherwise unattainable low self-noise and highest possible sound pressure levels. By focusing on this pattern - used in most recording situations - the attenuation of unwanted noise from behind is optimized. Off-axis sounds are reproduced naturally while isolation is increased. This also leads to high feedback suppression when the microphone is used in live situations or where speaker playback is involved. And at this price, there's no reason not to have a pair!

Classic design for transparent sound

The TLM 103 is addressed from the front, marked with the red Neumann logo on the microphone housing. The K 103 large-diaphragm capsule is based on the K 87, known from the U 67 / U 87 microphones.The capsule has a flat frequency response up to about 5kHz, and above that a wide flat 4dB presence boost. The large mesh head grille protects the capsule from plosive noise and effectively prevents plop noise. These features are achieved without the use of corrective resonance effects. Therefore, the TLM 103 maintains excellent impulse response and reproduces the details of music and speech without coloration. Thanks to the TLM 103's incredibly low self-noise level, even the smallest signals are reproduced noise-free. Since the TLM 103 can handle sound pressure levels up to 138 dB without distortion, it has a dynamic range of 131 dB (A-weighted).

Neumann's "TLM" technology

The letters TLM stand for "transformerless microphone." With TLM technology, the usual output transformer is replaced by an electronic circuit. As with traditional transformers, this ensures good common mode rejection and prevents RF interference that can affect the balanced audio signal.
