The Mini Muff from Rohema Percussion is a handy and smart drum damper. Mostly you will use it for snare drum, but of course it also works perfectly on your toms as well and instantly gives you that dry, old-school sound.
The Mini Muff is a furry damper (synthetic fur) that is not attached to the drumhead by itself; with a strong clamp, you attach the damper to the rim of the drum. Because of this, there is no permanent damping of the drumhead. When the head is struck, the damper shortly comes off from the head. The Mini Muff attenuates the sustain and acts like a gate; opens shortly and closes back up immediately. In other words, you get the open tone of the drum when you strike it, bit not the unwanted noises afterwards.
To vary the degree of muffling, the Mini Muff comes with an extra weight that you can add as desired. A sewn-in magnet keeps it perfectly in place, even during intense playing. A second, important function of the magnet, is that you can flip the Mini Muff up when you're not using it. It then conveniently sticks to the clamp and is completely detached from the head. Finally, you can adjust the distance of the muff relative to the rim by attaching it more or less far on the Velcro strip.
Truly a smart, complete muffler and a must-have for every drummer!
