U 87 is probably the best known and most widely used Neumann studio microphone available. It has a large dual-diaphragm capsule with three directional patterns: omnidirectional, cardioid and figure of 8. These characteristics are selectable with a switch under the grill (so called headgrill). This microphone sounds really beautiful and has the real natural, pure Neumann sound.
The 10 dB attenuation filter is located at the rear, which allows the microphone to handle even loud sound pressure levels (up to 127 dB without distortion) .
The U87 is the perfect choice for applications in studios (great for speech and vocals), broadcast, film and TV. It is a true all-rounder!
The letter 'A' in the name indicates that it is a recent design, compared to the U87 i microphones (which were built from 1967 to 1986). These modifications have been done in the electronic components - the capsule has always remained unchanged
