Martin's Standard Series guitars have set the tone for about 200 years and will continue to do so for the next 200 to come. Here you'll find all of the iconic models that have defined Martin as the premier brand and the "acoustic flattop" in general. And there's really nothing standard about the Standard Series; every guitar is handcrafted in the USA and according to Martin's long line of tradition. Whether you go for an 18 or a 40, an OO or a D, they all have that traditional, dry, woody character that is so unmistakable for that signature Martin sound.
The D-18 -somewhat unintentionally- takes the place of the younger brother of the Standard Series. Possibly because it's the most affordable model in the lineup, but it's in no way inferior to the iconic (and more expensive) D-28. They are simply different with the main difference being the side and back; the D-28 features rosewood, this D-18 features mahogany. And that gives a significant difference in sound. The bombastic of the D28 makes room for a very nice mid projection and a powerful low end on the D-18. The sound is more "in-your-face" and that's great for fingerstyle playing and the dynamics that brings allong.
Another difference with the D-28 is the appearance; the D-18 has -once again according to tradition- a very plain look, so you will not find any flashy bindings or other ostentation on this old soul.
