Yamaha DM5

The Yamaha DM5 is a professional digital mixer designed for live sound, theater, corporate AV, broadcast, and other productions that require a large number of channels, fast operation, and network audio. The DM5 brings much of the DM7 series’ workflow to a more compact form factor while introducing a new control concept featuring two tiltable 13.3-inch touchscreens, programmable 4.3-inch displays, and glass function keys.

With 60 mono input channels, 24 mix buses, 12 matrix buses, two stereo buses, and 12 DCA groups, the DM5 has ample capacity for productions that outgrow a compact digital mixer but for which a larger console is neither necessary nor practical. The console features 32 local analog inputs and 16 analog outputs. For digital audio networking, it includes a 64 x 64 Dante interface operating at 96 kHz.

The two fader sections together offer 26 motorized faders, consisting of 12 + 1 faders per bay. This allows two channel banks to be displayed and controlled side by side. The DM5 combines this physical control with configurable screens and controls, allowing the console to be customized for different operators and applications.

96 kHz audio quality and transparent sound-
Yamaha designs the DM5 around the same principle used in its larger digital consoles: capturing the input signal as neutrally as possible and then building the desired mix using EQ, dynamics, effects, and routing. The DM5 operates at 96 kHz and features extensive processing per input channel. Two dynamics sections are available, and the signal path can be customized. This allows you, for example, to change the position of EQ and Dyn2 within the signal path. Each input channel features a fully parametric 4-band EQ. You can choose from four EQ algorithms and use the built-in real-time analyzer as an overlay to view frequencies directly while adjusting settings. The dynamics section is also extensive. Both dynamics blocks offer a choice of multiple processor types:

• FET Limiter for fast peak control
• Diode Bridge Comp for compressor processing with the character of a diode-bridge design
• Comp 260 for VCA-based compression
• Legacy Comp for traditional compressor functions
• Gate
• De-Esser
• Expander
• Ducking

In addition, each input channel features, among other things, Input A/B, Gain Compensation, Digital Gain, an attenuator, and an adjustable high-pass filter ranging from 20 Hz to 2 kHz. The digital gain and attenuator have a range of -96 dB to +24 dB. For the high-pass filter, slopes of -6, -12, -18, and -24 dB per octave are available. The input delay can be set up to 1,000 ms. Extensive processing on the outputs. The output channels also feature their own processing. The DM5 features a full 8-band parametric EQ on the outputs, dynamics processing, and an output delay of up to 1,000 ms. In addition, there is a separate EQ Rack with 24 DSP resources. This can accommodate 31-band graphic equalizers, Flex15GEQs, and 8-band parametric EQs. An RTA overlay is also available for the parametric EQ. For applications with multiple speaker zones, fills, delays, and monitor feeds, Output Port Delay is also available for up to 20 ports.

43 Built-in Effects
The DM5 features an internal Effect Rack with 16 DSP resources and a total of 43 effect types. This means you won’t need an external effects processor for many productions. Among others, 13 reverb types are available, including REV HD and REV R3. For delay, eight different effect types are included. Additionally, the DM5 features modulation effects, saturation processing, an Amp Simulator, and processors such as the MBC3 multiband compressor. The internal effects are separate from the optional Premium Rack. As a result, the standard effects remain available when the console is used without an additional PY-DSP card.

Expanding the Premium Rack with the PY-DSP
The DM5 does not come standard with the DSP resources required for the Premium Rack. To enable this, the optional Yamaha PY-DSP card can be inserted into the PY slot. The PY-DSP adds 32 DSP resources, configured as 16 x 2 slots. This makes the Premium Rack plug-ins available that are also used within Yamaha’s larger digital ecosystems. Supported Premium Rack processors include the Rupert Neve Designs Portico 5033 EQ, Portico 5043 compressor, and Portico 5045, as well as the U76, Opt-2A, Comp276, Buss Comp 369, MBC4, DaNSe, EQ-1A, Equalizer601, Dynamic EQ, Dynamic EQ4, REV-X, OpenDeck, Analog Delay, Max100, Vintage Phaser, Dual Phaser, and HQ. Pitch. The collaboration with Rupert Neve Designs gives the DM5 access to processing algorithms based on well-known analog studio processors, while processors such as Dynamic EQ, MBC4, and DaNSe are suited for more technical corrections in live, installation, and broadcast applications.

32 Local Analog Inputs
The DM5 is equipped with 32local analog inputs and 16 analog outputs. This allows the mixer to be used directly for a wide range of applications without the need for an external stage box. For larger systems, the I/O can be expanded via Dante. The DM5 supports Yamaha’s R-series I/O racks, including the new RUio series and the various generations of Rio stage boxes. This makes it possible to continue using existing Yamaha Dante systems and integrate a DM5 into an existing infrastructure.

64 x 64 Dante at 96 kHz
The integrated Dante interface supports up to 64 input channels and 64 output channels at 96 kHz. Primary and Secondary Dante connections are provided for this purpose. Dante patching can be performed directly from the console. The DM5 can discover up to 127 Dante I/O devices within the network. Up to 24 I/O devices can be mounted on the console, and remote headamp control is available for up to 24 supported devices. This makes the DM5 suitable for systems where the physical inputs are located on stage, in a equipment room, or distributed throughout a building. Among other things, the console can control headamp gain, phantom power, and other parameters of supported Yamaha I/O devices. The parameters available depend on the connected device.

PY Slot for Additional I/O and Processing
In addition to the standard Dante interface, the DM5 features one PY expansion slot. This slot can be used for additional processing or to add other digital audio formats. With the PY64-D, you can add up to 64 Dante inputs and 64 Dante outputs. This card features Primary and Secondary Dante ports and integrated sample rate conversion. The PY64-MD provides up to 64 channels of MADI input and 64 channels of MADI output at 96 kHz / 24-bit. The card has dual BNC connectors for the MADI inputs and outputs and includes sample rate converters. With the PY8-AE, you can add eight AES/EBU inputs and eight AES/EBU outputs via a 25-pin D-sub connector. The inputs feature sample rate conversion. A PY-MIDI-GPI can be used for external control. This card adds MIDI IN/OUT via 5-pin DIN connectors and five GPI inputs plus five GPI outputs via D-sub. In addition, the Waves WSG-PY64 can be used to connect the DM5 to a Waves SoundGrid system.

Two 13.3-inch multi-touch screens
The DM5 features two 13.3-inch multi-touch screens, one per fader bay. The displays can be tilted to four different positions. This allows the viewing angle to be adjusted for a seated or standing working position and helps minimize reflections from stage lighting, venue lighting, or daylight. The console’s shallow depth also ensures that both touchscreens remain within easy reach. The interface offers both Selected Channel View and Overview. In Selected Channel View, you see the signal path and parameters of a single selected channel. Overview, on the other hand, displays multiple channels side by side, making it ideal for quickly keeping track of the mix during a show.

Glass function keys with dynamic labels
A striking feature of the DM5’s control concept is the glass function keys integrated into the display section. They combine physical key feedback with labels that can bedynamically changed by the software. The function label thus adapts to the current operating mode. For example, when “Sends on Fader” is used, an “ON” label may change to “SEND ON.” This allows Yamaha to make more functions accessible within the same console footprint without placing large numbers of fixed buttons around the screen. The DM5 has a total of 12 of these glass buttons, distributed across both fader sections.

Two programmable 4.3-inch touchscreens
A 4.3-inch touchscreen is located next to each main screen. These screens can be used for User Defined Keys and Fader Bank Select, among other functions. Each section features six glass User Defined Keys. Four banks allow different functions to be assigned to these controls. Additionally, four User Defined Knobs are available per screen. Parameters can be manually assigned to these encoders. With Dynamic Mode, the encoders’ functions automatically follow the item selected in Selected Channel View. This reduces the need for an engineer to navigate between different screen pages.

26 Motorized Faders
The Yamaha DM5 features two fader bays, each with 12 channel faders and one additional fader. In total, the console has 26 motorized faders. Custom Fader Banks allow you to determine which channels appear on a fader bank. Inputs, outputs, DCAs, and other frequently used channels can thus be arranged side by side. For larger productions, this can significantly speed up operation, as an operator is less dependent on standard channel layers.

12 DCA and 12 Mute Groups
The DM5 has 12 DCA groups and also supports Output DCA. With DCA Rollout, channels within a DCA can be quickly brought to the faders. In addition, 12 Mute Groups are available. Channel Link and Temporary Channel Link make it possible to link parameters across multiple channels. Temporary Channel Link is intended to temporarily control channels collectively without creating a permanent channel link.

500 Scenes
For productions where settings need to be saved and recalled, the DM5 has space for 500 scenes. Scene functionality includes Recall Safe, Focus Recall, and Fade Time. With Selective Load/Save, you can specify which parts of a file are loaded or saved, and Global Paste allows you to copy settings to multiple scenes or channels. This is particularly useful for festivals, theater performances, permanent installations, tours, and other situations where many different settings need to be managed.

Assist functions for faster setup
The DM5 includes Yamaha Assist functions that can support an engineer during setup and soundcheck. HA Assist analyzes input levels and suggests headamp settings. Naming Assist can suggest channel names and channel icons based on the input signal. Comp Assist analyzes an audio signal and suggests appropriate compressor parameters. Fader Assist can suggest balance settings for assigned channels. The engineer retains control over the final settings. These features are primarily intended to speed up preparatory tasks and provide a useful starting point.

Dugan Automixer Built In as Standard
The Yamaha DM5 comes standard with a 12-channel Dan Dugan Automixer. The Dugan Speech System algorithm automatically distributes gain across active microphones and reduces the level of microphones that are not currently in use. This is particularly useful for panel discussions, meetings, conferences, talk shows, presentations, and other applications involving many open-microphone setups. With the optional DEK-DUGAN Dugan Automixer License, the DM5’s capacity can be expanded to a maximum of 60 simultaneous automix channels.

Recording via USB or Dante
The DM5 offers various options for recording and playback. Via USB TO DEVICE, you can make a direct stereo recording and play back audio files. This allows for easy recording of a performance without a separate computer or recorder. Via the USB TO HOST connection, the DM5 functions as an 18-in/18-out USB audio interface. This allows multitrack audio to be transferred directly between the console and a computer. For larger multitrack productions, up to 64 channels can be used in both directions via Dante. The DM5 also supports Nuendo Live integration for live multitrack recording.

Virtual Soundcheck
With Virtual Soundcheck, previously recorded multitrack channels can be routed back to the DM5’s input channels. This allows an engineer to prepare a mix, processing, or system setup without the entire band or production needing to be present on stage. It can also be used to check settings after a show or to adjust an existing mix for the next venue.

DAW Remote
The DM5 can also be used as a controller for a DAW. With DAW Remote, levels and transport functions, among other things, can be controlled using the console’s physical faders, buttons, and encoders. DAW Remote Mode is accessible directly from the fader bank selection.

Bluetooth Audio Playback
The DM5 features Bluetooth audio for playing music. This allows, for example, background music or reference material to be streamed from a compatible mobile device to the console without using a separate analog connection.

DM Editor for Windows and Mac
With Yamaha DM Editor, a DM5 project can be prepared on a Windows or Mac computer. Settings can be configured offline before the console is available on site. DM Editor can also be used online with the console for additional control and as a backup interface. The DM Editor’s graphical interface matches that of the DM5. Console files from the DM5 and DM7 series are compatible with each other, allowing projects to be exchanged between the two series.

DM StageMix
DM StageMix enables remote control of the DM5 from an iPad. This allows an engineer to walk through the venue while mixing or to check a monitor mix from the stage. Two iPads can be used simultaneously with the console via a connected Wi-Fi access point.

MonitorMix for Musicians
Yamaha MonitorMix allows individual musicians to access their own monitor mix. Access can be password-protected so that a musician can only change the relevant settings and cannot access other parts of the console.

ProVisionaire Control PLUS and Kiosk
The DM5 also integrates with Yamaha ProVisionaire Control PLUS. This allows you to create custom control interfaces that display only the necessary parameters. For a fixed installation, for example, a simple interface can be created that allows staff to control only background music, volume, or a limited number of sources. With ProVisionaire Kiosk, such a control interface can be deployed as a secure user environment.

Broadcast Package
For broadcast applications, the optional Yamaha DEK-BR Broadcast Package can be added. This expansion adds features such as Mix Minus, Fader Cue Release, Back Stop PFL, Audio Follow Video, Source Selection Mix Mode, various meter functions, and 5.1 Surround. Yamaha has announced that a Loudness Meter will be included in a future update.

Theatre Package
For theater and musical productions, the optional Yamaha DEK-TH Theatre Package is available. This expansion adds, among other features, 4 Bank EQ/DYN, Actor Library, DCA Preset, DCA Scene Grid, MIDI Output Event on Scene, and Sound xR Image Control. This allows the DM5 to be configured for productions where actors, scenes, DCA assignments, and spatial audio positions frequently change during a performance.

Extensive Yamaha Ecosystem
The DM5 is designed to be part of a larger Yamaha audio network. The mixer can be combined with existing and new R-series I/O, the RUio series, Yamaha amplifiers, DM Editor, StageMix, MonitorMix, and ProVisionaire. Because Dante is integrated as standard, the physical I/O can be placed separately from the mixer’s location. A system can therefore start small with the 32 local inputs and later be expanded with additional stage boxes, I/O racks, or a PY expansion card. This makes the DM5 an attractive option for rental companies, theaters, live music venues, churches, corporate AV, schools, convention centers, and permanent installations where the system size may vary depending on the production.

More Compact Console with Two Fader Bays
Despite the two fader bays and two large touchscreens, Yamaha has limited the depth of the DM5 to 44.1 cm. This keeps the screens within easy reach and makes the mixer easier to position in FOH locations where available workspace is limited. The console is 82.6 cm wide and 23.5 cm high, including rubber feet. It weighs 21.5 kg. The power consumption is 130 watts.
