Dingwall Combustion 3-5 Vintage Burst, Pau Ferro

In addition to its prestigious Canadian custom shop instruments, Dingwall also offers a line of basses in the more affordable “Ready to Play” series. This series includes three models: the Combustion, the Combustion NG, and the D-Roc. The “regular” Combustion (the Combustion NG is Adam “Nolly” Getgood’s signature model) can be considered the most versatile “centerpiece” of the collection.

The body is made of swamp ash and—in most cases—features a quilted maple veneer top. The 5-piece maple neck features either a maple or pau ferro fingerboard, and of course, this bass also features the multiscale design. All Combustions come standard with an active EMG preamp and two or three Dingwall FD-3N pickups. The two pickup configurations can be set up as a humbucker (side by side) or as a Jazz Bass (like Dingwall’s Super-J). Combustion basses are available as 4-, 5-, or 6-string models.

Compared to the NG model, the Combustion is the more versatile of the two and works perfectly in a variety of genres; the combination of the tonewood and the EMG preamp provides a somewhat richer and broader tonal palette, while the NG is great if you’re looking for a sharp and aggressive tone (perfect for the genre the NG was designed for: metal). In addition, the Combustion has a more traditional look and is available in several stylish colors.

Either way, the bass response and tightness are incredible on every Dingwall thanks to the multiscale design.
