8-ply maple shells with HVLT construction
Maple has been a popular wood for drum kits for decades, and that’s no different here. The Design Series maple shells offer a warm foundation with plenty of attack and definition, allowing them to fit effortlessly into both live and studio settings. Subtle dynamics and playing nuances remain clearly audible without sacrificing body or presence. The 8-ply construction with alternating grain direction, using the HVLT process, also ensures a stable shell with a pure, consistent tone. DW uses precision-cut bearing edges on this series: 45 degrees on the toms and 60 degrees on the bass drum. The 45° bearing edges ensure that the toms respond evenly to the head’s vibration, resulting in a balanced response and efficient energy transfer. The 60° bearing edge on the bass drum, on the other hand, enhances the punch and low end, delivering a tight and powerful backbeat.

Thoughtfully Designed Hardware
The Design Series is also meticulously crafted when it comes to hardware. The lightweight mini-turret lugs reduce excess weight on the shell and allow the drum to resonate freely, without compromising stability. Combined with the triple-flanged hoops, they create an open soundscape with a wide range of tuning possibilities, suitable for both low, deep tunings and tighter, more direct setups. The True Pitch tension screws better maintain the chosen tuning during intense playing. Thanks to rubber washers, unwanted loosening is prevented, and everything stays securely in place. All hardware components are also equipped with rubber grommets, which ensure a clean metal-to-shell connection without any noise or rattling.
