If you're looking for an everyday workhorse, then Tama's Starphonic series is the right choice; a collection of professional snare drums that are robustly built and have many sound characters to choose from.
This is maple at its best; the Starphonic Maple is powerful but beautifully dry with plenty of woody character. The sweet spot is when it's tuned a little higher, where the maple shell gives a nice and natural ring, but still plenty of low-end and body. The hybrid bearing edge (45 degrees with rounded outer edge) adds a nice dry touch. It cuts through the mix perfectly, but also has a great dynamic range for subtle playing. The 6 mm / 6 ply maple shell has a beautiful and classy mappa burl outer layer.
